An irregular verbs game the whole class can play

Regular verbs add -ed in the past; irregular verbs change: go, went, gone. The wheel picks the verb, so nobody sticks to the easy ones. The class says the past simple and past participle, you show the answer and mark it. Begin with the A1 verbs, add a level when the class is ready, and save your class list to play turns, knockout or points.

How to play the irregular verbs quiz

  1. Choose what to ask: both forms, the past simple or the past participle.
  2. Pick the levels, A1 to B2+, or tick this week’s verbs in the list.
  3. Spin, let the class answer, then show the answer and mark it right or wrong.
  4. Save your class to play turns, knockout or points, and see which verbs to practise again.

Ways to use the irregular verbs quiz

  • A five-minute warm-up before a lesson on the past simple.
  • This week’s spelling or grammar list, ticked in the verb list.
  • A knockout final on Friday, with the winner at the board.
  • Practice before a test on regular and irregular verbs.
  • Printing the list for homework or a classroom wall.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many irregular verbs are there in English?

English has around 200 irregular verbs, but a learner meets far fewer. The SpinnerWheel irregular verbs list has 143, grouped by English Vocabulary Profile level from A1, the most common, to B2 and above.

What is the difference between regular and irregular verbs?

A regular verb forms its past simple and past participle by adding -ed: walk, walked, walked. An irregular verb changes in other ways: go, went, gone; buy, bought, bought; cut, cut, cut.

Is it learned or learnt?

Both are correct. American English uses learned; British English uses learned or learnt. The same goes for spelled and spelt, and smelled and smelt. The list shows both forms where British and American English differ.

What is the best way to learn irregular verbs?

Learn a few at a time, starting with the most common A1 verbs such as be, have, do, go and say. Say all three forms out loud, and group verbs that follow the same pattern: buy, bought, bought and bring, brought, brought.

Can a whole class play the irregular verbs quiz?

Save the class list once and the wheel picks who answers each verb. Play turns, knockout or points; a report at the end shows which verbs to practise again. It is free, and the names stay on the device.
